The CYCLE of ABUSE - Why We Repeat Traumatic Patterns: Insights from Baby Reindeer
Have you ever wondered why people repeat destructive patterns and seek validation in harmful places? Today on Psychiatry Simplified, we dive into a powerful monologue from the show "Baby Reindeer" to explore trauma and its link to the cycle of harm. Don’t worry, no spoilers ahead!
"Baby Reindeer" revolves around aspiring comedian Donnie Dunn. Working as a bartender in London, he offers a cup of tea to a customer named Martha, leading to a spiralling cascade into themes of obsession, trauma, and the struggle for control.
This video explores the realm of emotions, unconscious motivations, and their impact on behaviours. This exploration into psychodynamics reveals how deeply embedded emotions can profoundly impact our lives without us even recognising them.
We will delve into how past trauma influences current behaviours, the role of implicit emotional memories, and the challenging yet rewarding journey of psychodynamic psychotherapy.
Join us as we explore Donnie Dunn’s psychodynamic world in "Baby Reindeer" and understand the profound impact of trauma and self-sabotage on human behaviour.

Destruíram minha vida e me torturaram por ganância e irresponsabilidade.

I started on 30mgs 6 weeks back and it seemed to begin with this new drug up tp 8 times a day. I'm now on 60 mgs and it has got worse. I don't have diabetes as I was checked over in Jan. I will talk to my Dr in 2 weeks but wondered if you knew of this as a side effect?

Thanks for the feedback. I'll ask the editor to go easy on AI. It's not a common issue - however what Duloxetine can do is urinary retention so what can happen is incomplete bladder emptying which then manifests as a frequent urge to micturate which is the most likely mechanism rather than polyuria.

I did quit smoking with it though. I was on Ritalin from 3 to 16 and I built up a immunity to it and Adderall made me to jittery. Hello Dr. Rege, thank you for making these videos. They're very interesting and informative. A neuropsychiatrist told me I have aggitated depression 3 years ago. I'm wondering if agitated depression can be part of major depression? Or does agitated depression mean I don't have MDD anymore? I feel like I'm diagnosed with way too many psychiatric labels. Most of which I received at age 16, like MDD. Now, at 51, I have even more labels, including agitated depression. I can only sleep 3-5 hours a day even with Ambien for the last few years, because I'm stuck in hyperarousal mode. Can you recommend any natural supplements for this, ones that aren't from animal sources? Melatonin does nothing for me except give me headaches at 10mg or higher. I'm on so many medications as it is and decided to go off of some several months ago because of side effects or lack of making a positive difference anymore. I do try to take green tea extract and turmeric curcurum (thanks for recommending in another video) I'm sorry this became such a long comment. ☹️

@@PsychiatrySimplified This was very helpful, thank you. I've been on so many of those drugs you mentioned in the video like lithuim when I was 16. Hated that one. I could think more clearly on Rexulti and Wellbutrin XL, but developed vision problems from Rexulti so took myself off of both. Abilify made me gain weight and made me dizzy. Wellbutrin XL helped for a while but then I hit a plateau. Adderall helps me with ADHD. I wanted to be able to get better without going back on more medications, but I'm failing in the self help department. A psych. nurse I had an appointment with a few months ago told me that if I don't get back on antidepressants, I'm going to wind up in the hospital, which shocked me and made me even more paranoid that people were going to come and take me by force. I'm not even su!cid@l at all, even though I'm depressed, I wouldn't do that to my children and animals. I'm not a dangerous, violent person in the least. I never have been. So I didn't understand why she told me that. It's just that these drugs have side effects that start to take more of a toll on people as they age, at least for me and many others I know around my age they have. I gradually began to feel that numbing my emotions with antidepressants and antipsychotics could be counterproductive to processing them and moving forward, but maybe I was wrong. I wish there were a more natural way to get better. I don't want to give up all hope of ever getting better but isn't that a stupid thought because mental illness is not going anywhere in all this time, so stupid of me to wish for the possibility of 'mind over matter' being enough. Thank you, Dr. Rege, I appreciate your kindness, and for sharing that video. 😊

@@PsychiatrySimplified £800 medication cost with £45 prescription cost. I was earning 3k a month after tax back in that job and the benefits of medication ment I didnt mind the cost. Had to go the murly center in London to get it think that was what it was called, on standard NHS ADHD service now murly center prescribed in first place as they are a specialist ADHD center. Tried Adderall before hand and I felt wired on it hated it. Desoxyn was smooth didn't feel It kick in or wear off, one minute you thinking thousands of things at a time in your head. Next minute your calm, collect and focused and just concentrate at the job at hand. Didn't have any issues coming off it like side effects on to the vyvanse or elvanse as we call it in the uk. Elvanse even at dose I'm prescribed works well last long enough but doesn't give me the clarity of mind desoxyn did. Never felt as calm as I did while taking it. Like I said to others wonderful medication just a shame we don't have it in the UK as a normal controlled drug prescription without having to import it.

Medicated over-the-counter inhalers STILL contain lev-meth in the US. That didn't end in 1994, they just opted for a more obscure naming convention such as levmetamfetamine or l-desoxyephedrine. People would cut them open and swallow the camphor-stinking "wick"--not advised. (Caveat: maybe that's changed since 2010-ish?)

My girlfriend was prescribed Adderall for adhd for many years and upon discovering prescription methamphetamine (in 2008) she asked her psychiatrist to prescribe it since her daily Adderall dose of 90mg was no longer effective. She took it as prescribed for 1 month but at next psychiatrist app she had her doc put her back on the Adderall bc she found the desoxyen to be highly ineffective at treating her adhd symptoms. Everybody is different physically and psychologically and therefore what works for her isnt necessarily gonna work for another patient with same diagnosis. Thats my biggest issue with psych meds, its like patients are forced to make themselves lab rats upon inital diagnosis when they begin course of treatment that includes prescription medication and without a measurable test (with exception of Lithium) to show whether or not a certain psych medicine is.working, patients have to do "trial and error" when beginning a new med and the doctor has to then take the self-reports by patients to find out if the newly introduced medication is effective. This can be a slippery slope given the high prevalence of co-occuring disorders (specifically depression, bi-polar, etc + drug/alcohol abuse/dependence/addiction) so i know its a hard thing to live with metal illness but i suppose treating those who suffer from those illnesses is just as tough! **Great job Dr. Sanil Rege!** Another informative video viewable by audiences - the novices to the highly educated - you may simplify psychiatry but its still very interesting and informative as always!! Cheers🎉
